Glen Canyon Regional Park (south of Highway 97) in Westbank
What will you find here?
The bridge - built just a few years ago and installed as a gift to the community - leads to several trails that follow Powers Creek through the canyon but end at the boundaries of private land. It is in this area that Deborah unexpectedly caught sight of her first Great Grey Owl, the largest member of the owl family, and nearly passed out when he took wing under her nose !
Where is it?
The lower section of Glen Canyon Regional Park reaches uphill from the fish ladders on Gellatly Road ( see our description in “Gellatly Bay Treasures”, ) is interrupted by a stretch of private land, then resumes through a forested area just below Highway 97. On the other side of Highway 97, there are a number of accesses to the park in various places on the Glenrosa hillsides as the park extends up toward higher elevations.
- Option 1: Great for a short time commitment - take a single hour or linger for three:
If you want to go down toward the lake, you can take Gellatly Bay Road from Highway 97 northbound (facing Kelowna) and the Glenrosa Road overpass and drive downhill somewhat parallel to the highway, with a big orchard on your right. Keep your eyes peeled - the trail head is not very noticeable and you’re almost there.
Shortly after the road turns and runs toward the lake, there on your left are the mail boxes (near the Glen Canyon subdivision). Park near the mail boxes. You’ll see a little sign and a flight of stairs down into the park - a great place to go for the quick and easy version of exploring Glen Canyon park.
- Option Two for the shortie south-of-Highway 97 exploration: By car or on foot, go to the back of the Westbank Holiday Inn. Head toward the forest, and find the twin gates. See the RDCO sign. Take the path to the left, into the canyon area, which winds around the back of a small private property, then heads over to a striking white bridge over Powers Creek.
