Westbank & District Chamber of Commerce and Information Centre
The oasis in the centre - in more ways than one!
by Deborah Greaves
What is it?
It’s the Westbank and District Chamber of Commerce office, it’s the Tourist Information Centre, and the satellite office of our Westside government - the Regional District of the Central Okanagan. There’s more - in addition to the maps, brochures and business information commonly found at Chamber of Commerce offices and Visitor Info Centres, this one has another dimension. It’s also a safe haven if you need some free time on a computer, or emergency personal advice.
How do I get there?
It’s an odd location, in a way - in the centre of the village section of Westbank, yet almost hidden. That’s because this info centre sits in the middle of the Highway 97 couplet, like an island in the midst of two traffic flows. The only folks who can easily spot the info centre - especially when they’re caught at a red light - are those traveling in-bound from Peachland or the Connector, or those coming downhill from the Westbank Holiday Inn or Paynter’s Market. It’s close to the intersection of Highway 97 and Old Okanagan, and you can access it from Main Street on foot by a set of stairs.
As you pass Westbank Towne Centre shopping centre on Dobbin/Highway 97, heading toward Kelowna, there’s a left-turn lane just after the junction of Old Okanagan Highway and Highway 97. A sweep of green lawn tells you that there’s something there - then you’ll spot the flags, and a small, cheery little building sitting on the slope. You’re looking at 2375 Pamela Road.
What will I find here, what can we do?
Tucked in this apparently small building is Chamber manager Leah Thordarson’s office,
a meeting room, Chamber of Commerce resources, the satellite office of the Regional District, fishing and hunting guides, a wide array of information brochures – including self help resources and social aid brochures - as well as local attractions and accommodations. Almost all the brochures are free, and maps are reasonably priced.
Bonus discovery: Thanks to a grant from Industry Canada, you can use the computer here - with access to the internet, paper and a printer, for free. If you need to download information or directions, seek help, check your message or even revise your resume, the computer is available here for you.
Find a safe personal haven: if you’ve got worries, and need to find out what services are available in our community to help you, you can come here to pick up a brochure and research resources on the computer.
Relax awhile: Thanks in part to Tourism BC, you and your family or friends are welcome to picnic on the soft lawn, shaded by a protective gazebo, and enjoy the sculpture, a new garden, and the view of Lake Okanagan. There is even a bowl of water for your pets.
What are the hours?
Starting on the long weekend in May, from Saturday May 20th to the end of August, the Info Centre will be open seven days a week. Regularly, it’s open regular weekdays from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, and you can call ahead to 768-3378.
The Westbank & District Chamber of Commerce offices and Info Centre are used regularly by local residents as well as visitors. Many locals are planning trips around the province for themselves or friends and family, and often checking accommodations and attractions to enjoy when company comes.
Welcome to Westbank, BC!
