Keeping Your Home Show Ready
OK, your house is now the best it has ever looked (and you are not sure you want to sell it anymore hee hee!), but until the house sells, you still have to live in it. And real life comes with real mess! How do you keep your home "show ready" without tearing your hair out?
"A little time invested on the front end can earn you thousands on the closing end!"
Maintaining a "show-ready" home is easy with these seven quick steps:
In the Kitchen: Clean up the dishes after each meal. Wipe down the table and put the table cloth and vase/candles/fruit basket on top. This will keep the table from getting loaded up with stuff between meals.
Kid stuff: Before your little ones go to bed, allow about 10 minutes for them to put away their toys and dirty clothes from the day. This is a great habit for them to get into. Help them out, make a game out of it. Remember the bed time story when you are done!
Say "goodnight" to your home EVERY night: Do this about an hour before you go to bed each night. Grab a basket or an empty box. Start at the front door and work your way room by room through the house. Put away any coats, shoes, books, newspapers, mail, dirty dishes, laundry, trash, recycle, etc that may have accumulated during the day. Even if the stuff belongs to kids or your spouse, don't nag them now. Moving time is already stressful. Just put the stuff away and move to the next area. I try to get my "house goodnight" done during the commercials. Lock your home up as your go. This little ritual of saying "goodnight" to your home will soon become a habit, and you will be able to whip through in in just a few minutes!
Make up your bed in the morning: Before you leave your bedroom, make the bed, take a quick peek to ensure the "unmentionables" have made it to the laundry hamper, and your room is in order.
If the kids don't make up their own beds, pop into their rooms and straighten them out. It will only take minutes.
Shine the bathrooms in the morning: If you have never done this before on a daily basis you will not believe how little time this takes. Grab your window cleaner and a rag. Wipe out the toothpaste splatters, shine the top of the toilet and the edge of the tub. Then wipe down the mirror. Straighten the towels, put away the dirty laundry, flush the toilet, put down the lid, and you are done!
Shine the kitchen in the morning: This is also quick. After the breakfast dishes have been cleared, grab the window cleaner and sparkle the top of the stove, the sink, the faucet, and the counters. Sweep any crumbs that are on the floor and you are set!
If you know you have a showing that day: sweep the floors, vacuum the rugs, ensure the beds look neat, and the toilet lids are down.
